“When I heard about AKAP, I knew that I had to get involved. I went into medicine because of my grandfather's illness. As he was undergoing treatment, what was striking to me was the lack of Korean American physicians who were able to understand and help his emotional issues related to his ailment. My family's struggles with his sickness stayed with me throughout medical school and helped me decide on a career path in geriatric psychiatry. As my career developed, I became interested in how communities cope with lack of services. Thinking back to how my own community did not know how to help one another, I started to see value in professional organizations and influence of like-minded individuals working together. Getting involved in AKAP was a way for me to bring my interests together to try to help the Korean American community. I am hopeful that as more Korean Americans become accepting of mental health issues as treatable, AKAP can have a significant role."

“AKAP has helped me transition from being a resident to thriving as an attending. We have support from early career psychiatrists still in training, to psychiatrists with decades of experience. We also have psychiatrists in various interest and expertise including child & adolescent psychiatry, family medicine/psychiatry combined program, academic career, community mental health, private practice, correctional psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry. Our common goal and mission is to serve Korean-American community through academic activities as well as supporting each other as Korean American psychiatrists. I hope to see more early career psychiatrists getting involved in AKAP and supporting each other.”

“I got my MD degree in Rosalind Franklin University and completed residency training in Boston Medical Center. I am interested in systematic improvements for treatment of opioid use disorder, and also studying behavioral addiction. I came to AKAP as I wanted to find ways to give back to Korean American community as a psychiatrist. Besides, it is fun to hang out with AKAP people.”
